Resumo: There are many healthcare professionals involved with child care. However, the pediatrician is the first to have and keep in touch with the child from birth. This professional has the important mission to pass on the first information on oral health to parents and refer the baby to the dentist. Objective: To evaluate the knowledge and attitudes of pediatricians regarding the oral health of their patients. Materials and Methods: The research was carried out in private clinics/clinics in the municipalities of São José, Palhoça and Santo Amaro da Imperatriz, SC. The data were collected in the period between January and April 2018, through a questionnaire delivered personally to the respondent. The questionnaire was composed of 15 questions distributed as follows: demographic issues; topics related to oral health and the use of fluoridated dentifrices; relationship between pediatric and pediatric dentists and oral health knowledge passed on during graduation. Results: 32 pediatricians from the private network participated in the study. Of these, (68.8%) were female and (31.3%) were male. The results were analyzed according to descriptive statistics. Most (62.5%) pediatricians affirm that their knowledge is adequate in relation to oral health. As for the minimum fluoride recommended in the dentifrices that would be between 1000 and 1100 ppm, (37.5%) do not know. Among the participants only (15.6%) acquired knowledge about oral health at undergraduate level. Regarding the interaction with Pediatric Dentistry, more than half of the physicians (53.1%) do not usually have contact with the pediatric dentistry (34.4%) sometimes and only (12.5%) talk about patients in common. Conclusion: Although pediatricians are the first health professionals to get in touch with children, there are often gaps in information on some aspects of dental health. The results show that pediatricians have doubts regarding some oral health topics, mainly related to the use of fluoride dentifrices.

Destes, (68,8%) do sexo feminino e (31,3%) do sexo masculino.
