Resumo: This final paper demonstrates how meteorology interferes with air operations in the Andes region. The research was characterized as explanatory with bibliographic and documentary procedures by means of books, manuals and regulations, the approach used was quantitative and qualitative. In this proposal, an approach was offered on meteorological phenomena arising from large orographic formations such as - mountain waves, fohen effect and clear sky turbulence - and their consequences for operators and pilots flying in these regions. Through maps and weather reports from Santiago Airport (SCEL) and Mendoza (SAME), it was explained how Harrison's abacus works, an important tool used to define the existence of turbulence in the planning of flights in the Andes mountain range . Operational aspects such as depressurization and engine loss in a region with adverse weather were approached to better understand the case study of the accident popularly known as “The Miracle of the Andes”, where hypotheses were raised for the contributing factors of this event. Strong winds and adverse weather are believed to be the reasons for the crew's spatial disorientation at that time. The results pertinent to Harrison's abacus pointed out that the pressure difference cannot be considered the only factor for the existence of turbulence.
