Associação entre prematuridade e diagnóstico de transtorno do neurodesenvolvimento: um estudo caso-controle

Introduction: Most psychiatric disorders have their age of onset at an early stage of life, during childhood, adolescence, or early adulthood, a fact that may contribute to the high prevalence and burden evidenced in the literature. Among the psychiatric disorders commonly diagnosed in childhood and adolescence, so-called neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and attention deficit / hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), present, in addition to the early age at onset, significant impairment functional and family overload. Objective: To investigate the association between prematurity and diagnosis of neurodevelopmental disorders in children / adolescents. Methods: Case-control study based on medical records data from a specialized outpatient clinic. In addition to prematurity, socio-demographic, gestational and perinatal data were included as independent variables. Multiple logistic regression was performed to investigate the association between the independent variables and the outcome. Results: Prematurity and psychiatric history in one of the parents were associated with a greater chance of neurodevelopmental disorders (adjusted odds ratio) OR= 3.46 (CI 95% 1.15;7.92) OR: 6.43 (CI95% 3.09 ;13.40, respectively including stratified analyzes for ADHD and ASD. Conclusion: Efforts to modify risk factors such as prematurity, as well as increasingly effective care for premature infants can have an impact on the reduction of disorders diagnosed in childhood and adolescence usually related to an important individual, family and social burden.
