The Spanish State and its mosaic of identities have revealed in recent years increasing political instability involving some of its ethnic groups, such as the Catalan. The relevant economic and territorial relevance of the region to the country, in contrast to the separatist impetus, has increased the tensions of a possible secession of Catalonia. In 2017 it culminated in a independence referendum. This paper aims to present the narratives constructed by the Spanish newspaper, El País, about the Catalan government and the independence process during the years of 2010 and 2017. To this end, its structure was divided into four chapters. The first contains the introductory part of this thesis. The second seeks to contextualize Catalan’s separatism between the past and the present. The third seeks to interpret the narrative constructed by the newspaper, El País, about the Catalan government and its independence process. Finally, the fourth comprises the final considerations. Thus, this research was defined as exploratory, qualitative, bibliographic and documentary.
