Resumo: Introduction: Radiotherapy is one of the treatments for head and neck cancer, which can bring several oral sequelae during and after therapy. Among the complications, the most serious is osteoradionecrosis (ORN). After radiation, the bone reveals itself with low concentration of oxygen and minimal vascularization, leading to a bone necrosis. To prevent, it is necessary the preparation of health professionals. Objective: To analyze the level of knowledge of health professionals from Unisul, Pedra Branca campus, about ORN in the jaws. METHODS: A cross-sectional quantitative descriptive study was carried out, where data were collected through questionnaires, with closed and open questions through intentional sampling, in the months of September, October and November 2018. The general variables The variables were the treatment for head and neck cancer, radiotherapy and its oral complications, the definition of ORN, symptomatology, treatment and prevention of ORN. The statistical analysis was based on the presentation of tables of all variables and the Pearson chi-square test was applied. Outcome: Of the 92 academics interviewed, 2/3 do not know the meaning of ORN. The Odontology course (90% of the students) showed a higher level of knowledge compared to the other courses (p = 0.001), while the older age group (55.5%) was more aware of ORN when compared to younger students (21.6%), (p = 0.038). Regarding prevention, 42.8% of the students did not know ORN, however, they answered that there is prevention (p = 0.025). Conclusion: The proportion of academics who know osteorradionecrosis (31.5%) reveals the need for a better approach to the subject, so that future healthcare professionals are more prepared to support patients treated with radiotherapy.
