Riscos ocupacionais da exposição a agentes químicos utilizados na laminação de embarcações de fibra de vidro

The construction of fiber glass boats require the production of Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic throught a process called resin transfer molding. This process envolves a lot of chemical products from solvents and glue to resin and “fiberglass dust”. The object of this work is to study the steps of the resin transfer molding, in order to understand the relation between the worker and his labor activity, enumerate the chemical substances used in the process and discover the risky agents of chemical nature in them to verify the implication of this process on workers health. For this purpose it was needed the use of Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) and the book Doenças Relacionadas ao Trabalho (“Work Related Diseases”) writen by Health Ministry of Brazil and Pan American Health Organization. It was found that there are 21 work related diseases that afects several sytems of the body and can generate mental disorders or the appearing of tumors that are directly conected to the risk agents of chemical nature found in the products used in resin transfer molding. Moreover, it became evident that the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is indispensable to preserve the physical integrity and the worker health and the development of new and more modern technologies is theq best way to obtain a cleaner and safer process of Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic manufacturing.
