Resumo: For years, work on two-dimensional radiographs has discussed the possibility of a relationship between bone-base size and upper airway volume, especially the oropharynx. The present study aimed to evaluate the existence of a correlation between the volume of the oropharynx and the effective lengths of the maxilla and mandible in adult patients using computerized tomography. Computed tomography of 37 patients (18 females and 19 males, mean age 37.59 years) was analyzed using OsiriX Lite software version 10.0.4. The measures used were CoA and CoGn (McNamara) and volume of the oropharynx, measured from the extension of the palatal plane to the lowest point of the third cervical vertebra. The results showed a weak correlation between the mean volumes of CoA and CoGn, with no statistical significance. A strong relationship was found between CoA and CoGn measurements. Thus, it was possible to conclude that there was no statistically significant correlation between the volume of the oropharynx and the effective lengths of the maxilla and mandible when evaluated in three-dimensional images.

O presente estudo teve por objetivo avaliar, por meio de tomografias computadorizadas, a existência de uma correlação entre o volume da orofaringe e os comprimentos efeitvos da maxila e da mandíbula em pacientes adultos. Para tal, foram analisadas tomografias computadorizadas de 37 pacientes (18 mulheres e 19 homens, média de idade de 37,59 anos), através do software OsiriX Lite versão 10.0.4. As medidas utilizadas foram CoA e CoGn (McNamara) e volume da orofaringe, medida da extensão do plano palatino ao ponto mais inferior da terceira vértebra cervical. Os resultados demonstraram haver uma fraca correlação entre as médias dos volumes entre CoA e CoGn, sem significância estatística. Foi encontrada uma forte relação entre as medidas CoA e CoGn.
