Resumo: Amalgam has been used as a restorative material in dentistry for a long time and has undergone over the years some modifications in its composition aiming at better in its clinical results. however, there is a great deal of discussion about the continuity of its use in clinical dental practice, due to the known toxicity of mercury, a material present in its composition. and despite the presence of some cons of this material, the use of amalgam nowadays still occurs because it has some advantageous characteristics. in this review of literature we will show a little of the characteristics of this material and especially how we should handle it and discard it due to the toxic material present in its composition, also discussing the feasibility of its use in the present day.

Porém atualmente, existe grande discussão em relação à continuidade de seu uso na prática clínica odontológica, devido a conhecida toxicidade do mercúrio, material presente na sua composição. E apesar presença de alguns contras deste material, o uso do amalgama nos dias de hoje ainda ocorre pois ele possui algumas características vantajosas.
