To think historically about Document Preservation, so that it can operate conceptually and technically the phenomena surrounding the relations between cultural objects and time, is a perspective that must be a part of the professional life of librarians that dedicate themselves to preservation. From a theoretical analysis, the goal of this article is to reflect historically about the domain of Document Preservation. As a result of this research, it can be attested that each historical period has preserved documents according to a set of principles and contemporary values that, in its turn reflect a collective mentality, a culture. It is also possible to observe the development of practices of a preservative nature that, with time, result in the formation of Document Preservation as a scientific discipline. The librarian that dedicates himself or herself to preservation today is a part of this journey, facing new challenges, especially when it comes to digital preservation. Undoubtedly, the historical reflection about Document Preservation can sustain more qualified preservationist actions, in the conceptual or technical field, as well as positioning the document in its timely, material, symbolic and cultural context.
