Personal characteristics of undergraduate dental students of the Universidade do Planalto Catarinense – Lages – SC, Brazil

The purpose of this study was to determine the personal characteristics of undergraduate students of the School of Dentistry, Universidade do Planalto Catarinense/UNIPLAC, to reveal the reasons they had for choosing this specific course and their expectancies about their future profession. All students of the first to the tenth term of the course answered a structured questionnaire prepared for this study (n = 214). Data were collected during the first semester of 2004. Among other findings, it was detected that 53.3% of the students are women, most of them are from the state of Santa Catarina, they are single and young, have no children, present high socioeconomic level and parental educational level. They expect to specialize in the future, to work with private and public health care, and to be well paid. Their choice for Dentistry was based mainly on personal and professional satisfaction. They believe that the objective of Dentistry is the prevention and maintenance of oral health. The results of this study showed changes that have been occurring in dentistry and in the teaching of dentistry. The results also contributed to help characterize the qualifications that a professional who graduates from UNIPLAC must have.
