Editorial parameters evaluation of some Brazilian publications in Dentistry

Resumo: This study aimed at assessing the profile of some Brazilian publications in the field of Dentistry. Journal issues published from January 1995 to December 2004 were randomly selected. A total of 255 issues with 1,071 papers were analyzed, considering the following aspects: publication date, institution which originated the publication, number of authors, participation of undergraduate students or Scientific Initiation scholarship holders, dental specialty of the article, financial support, category of the publication, involvement of human beings and ethical aspects. According to the results, most publications were related to the geographical area of influence of the city where the journal is published. Most articles were original, consisting mainly of retrospective epidemiological studies. It was also observed that the editorial requirements of the journals were generally not completely complied with.

Foram selecionados, aleatoriamente, fascículos de revistas publicadas no período de janeiro de 1995 a dezembro de 2004. Foram analisados 255 números, com o total de 1.071 artigos publicados, considerando-se os seguintes aspectos: data de publicação, instituição que gerou a publicação, número de autores, participação de acadêmicos ou bolsistas de iniciação científica, especialidade odontológica do artigo, financiamento, categoria da publicação, envolvimento de seres humanos e aspectos éticos. Os resultados mostraram que a maioria das publicações está relacionada à área geográfica de influência da cidade-sede da revista. A maioria dos artigos era original, a maior parte constituída por estudos epidemiológicos retrospectivos.
