The “cabra macho” wears a skirt: new masculinities in the patriarchal scenario

There is a growing discussion in the media and specialized fashion journalism that suggests a greater inclination on the part of the male audience towards adopting skirts as attire. However, in the northeastern region of Brazil, seeing men wearing this garment remains sporadic. Our work aimed to bring real visibility to male skirt wearers, and we established the city of Recife as a reference point for our investigations. Studies on masculinity (Connell, 1995; Kimmel, 1997) and regional history (Albuquerque, 1999, 2009, 2013) served as the theoretical foundation for this research, which was guided by the following questions: who are these men, what spaces do they occupy, and what are the adversities they face for wearing an item considered feminine in the collective imagination? It was concluded that the specifics accompanying the act of wearing a male skirt are linked to the region’s context, education, and culture, and that the city’s patriarchal history still influences new forms of masculinity.
