Effects of the use of lean construction principles on the operational performance of civil construction companies: a survey considering the perception of professionals in Rio Grande do Sul

Lean Construction assists in the management of the processes of construction companies, seeking the reduction of activities that do not add value and the variability of the process. In addition, it can provide increased product flexibility and promote the use of continuous process improvement. However, despite the reported benefits, there is a paucity of research that assesses the effects of using Lean Construction. The aim of this research is to analyze the perception of engineering and civil construction professionals regarding the benefits provided by the application of the principles of lean construction as a philosophy that assists civil construction companies to improve their operational performance. A survey was conducted with engineers and managers who work in the construction industry in Southern Brazil. Linear regression was used for data analysis. Among the main results it was possible to identify the prevailing principles for increasing the operational performance of companies that use lean construction. As noted, the use of precast products or the use of kits was pointed out as the most relevant, followed by flexibilization of exits, control of nonconformities in services in the company, encouragement to the employee to present new ideas, time control and the use of benchmarking. Identifying prevailing variables on improving operational performance can guide managers in future decisions.
