Resumo: Insomnia and depression are very common conditions of morbidity and mortality in general population. The concurrence of both conditions simultaneously in the same patient is very often. There are several available agents for their treatments, but side effects and poor response are the reasons for abandoning therapy. The understanding of the physiology of daytime rhythm over sleep and humor has led to the study of melatonin and its analogs. They propose the treatment of both conditions with a different mechanism of action from the present options for clinical use. The role of melatonin and its analogs is the objective of this review.
