Suicide in elderly population in Sao Paulo State, Brazil

Resumo: | Objective: to study suicide in the elderly population of the state of São Paulo, Brazil, evidencing personal characteristics of the event and some of its possible risk factors. Methodology: the data used came from the Public Security Department of the State of São Paulo, based on police reports, complemented by information from the Forensic Medical Institute. Results: the results showed the occurrence of 380 deaths by suicide among the elderly in 2015, projecting a mortality rate equal to 6.7 per 100,000 inhabitants, with a clear predominance of males and 75 years of age or older. Hanging was the most used method, followed by exogenous intoxication, in both sexes; the third position was occupied by firearms, in men, and fall from heights of high in women. Known as an important risk factor for suicide, mental disorders, especially depression, were mentioned in 38.2% of the cases as possible motivators for the suicidal act. Besides this, other pathologies were mentioned in 20.3%, and other problems, such as personal relationships, family losses, and financial problems, in 18.2% of the cases. It was also verified that previous suicide attempts had occurred in 36 cases. Conclusions: The results made it possible to establish the epidemiological profile of suicide in this population, in addition to knowing details about possible risk factors, extremely important elements when thinking about prevention. Because of the richness of details, the use of this source should have stimulated in complementation to the Mortality Information System (SIM/MS). |

Resultados: los resultados mostraron la ocurrencia de 380 muertes por suicidio de ancianos en 2015, proyectando una tasa de mortalidad igual a 6,7 por 100.000 habitantes, con claro predominio del sexo masculino y el grupo de edad de 75 años o más. El ahorcamiento fue el método más utilizado, seguido de la intoxicación exógena, en ambos sexos; la tercera posición la ocuparon las armas de fuego, en los hombres, y la precipitación alta en las mujeres. Conocidos como un importante factor de riesgo para el suicidio, los trastornos mentales, principalmente la depresión, fueron mencionados en el 38,2% de los casos como posibles motivadores del acto suicida. Además, se mencionaron otras patologías en el 20,3% y otros problemas, como relaciones personales, pérdidas familiares y problemas económicos, en el 18,2% de los casos. También se constató que hubo intentos de suicidio previos en 36 casos. Conclusiones: los resultados permitieron establecer el perfil epidemiológico del suicidio en esta población, además de conocer detalles sobre posibles factores de riesgo, elementos sumamente importantes a la hora de pensar en la prevención. Por la riqueza de detalles, el uso de esta fuente debió estimular la incorporación del Sistema de Información de Mortalidad (SIM/MS).Objetivo: estudar o suicídio na população idosa do Estado de São Paulo, Brasil, evidenciando as características pessoais, do evento e alguns de seus possíveis fatores de risco. Metodologia: os dados utilizados provêm da Secretaria da Segurança Pública do Estado de São Paulo, com base em boletins de ocorrência, complementados por informações advindas do Instituto Médico Legal. Resultados: os resultados mostraram a ocorrência de 380 mortes por suicídio de idosos, em 2015, projetando taxa de mortalidade igual a 6,7 por cem mil habitantes, com nítida predominância do sexo masculino e da faixa etária 75 anos ou mais. O enforcamento foi o método mais utilizado, seguido de intoxicação exógena, em ambos os sexos; o terceiro posto foi ocupado por arma de fogo, nos homens, e precipitação de lugar elevado nas mulheres. Conhecidos como importante fator de risco para o suicídio, os transtornos mentais, principalmente a depressão, foram mencionados em 38,2% dos casos como possíveis motivadores do ato suicida. Além disso, foram mencionadas outras patologias em 20,3% e outros problemas, tais como os de relacionamentos pessoais, perdas familiares e problemas financeiros, em 18,2% dos casos. Verificou-se também terem ocorrido tentativas anteriores de suicídio em 36 casos. Conclusões: os resultados possibilitaram estabelecer o perfil epidemiológico do suicídio nessa população, além de conhecer detalhes sobre os possíveis fatores de risco, elementos extremamente importantes quando se pensa em prevenção.
