Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a new therapeutic approach for the treatment of various psychiatric disorders.This consists in applying on the brain a direct electric current that flows between two relatively large electrodes (cathode and anode). During tDCS, an electric current of low intensity is applied by penetrating the scalp and skull reaching the cerebral cortex and may modify the resting membrane potential of neurons, and therefore modulate neuronal firing rate. The largest number of studies has focused on the treatment of depression and schizophrenia, with very promising results. In the case of drug use, tDCS also seems to be an approach that can help to reduce the craving. In other situations, tDCS presents still very preliminary results. Thusthis article is to systematically review the literature on the use of tDCS for psychiatric disorders.
