Resumo: Background: There is sufficient evidence to support the importance of programming in the perinatal period and early life in the prevention or development of disease throughout life. Methods: Using as main references the lectures in ESPGHAN 2016 we made a literature review in the databases PubMed, Scielo and Google Scholar, the main objective is to show the importance of the impacts of the intestinal microbiota in the health of infants and children in the short and long term. Findings: It is documented from a fetal epigenetic imprinting by bacterial translocation during pregnancy, which provides the offspring one microbiome intrauterine pioneer. The presence of maternal components of the microflora of the fetus in utero is an important fetal immune system development supply leading to the induction of oral tolerance and respiratory allergens, but may also result in an unfavorable epigenetic factor in maternal obesity. Conclusions: It is clear and evident the importante of pediatricians in monitoring the development of the intestinal microbiota of children from intrauterine life. There are several windows of opportunity for the child’s programming intervention to minimize the impact on health in the short and long term.
