Resumo: Objective: This study set out to identify the prevalence of nutritional disorders in patients treated at a children’s neuropsychiatric day clinic, based on data from medical records in April 2013 - July 2015. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study of prevalence. Research project approved by the Research Ethics Committee. Data obtained for age, gender, weight and height, diagnosis and current medication. Body mass index (BMI = weight/height2) calculated by World Health Organization references. Results: The study analysed medical records of 381 patients, aged between 3 and 19 years (mean = 11), X males and Y females. The prevailing nutritional status was thinness, especially among patients with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADH). Overweight and obesity were more prevalent in mentally retarded patients. The most prevalent diagnoses were ADHD (n = 180; 47.49%). ADHD was the most prevalent in males (n= 147; 54,8 %) and in females (n= 34; 30,6%). 0,5% of patients were preschoolers, 26,3% were students and 73,2% adolescents. In terms of medication, 21.2% (n = 81) were taking Methylphenidate while 11.8% (n = 45) were taking Risperidone. Conclusion: In this population, thinness is most prevalent, while overweight and obesity prevail in the healthy population of this same age group. It suggested that further studies on the nutritional status of children and adolescents with psychiatric disorders be carried out with a view to drafting multidisciplinary care strategies encompassing nutritional aspects to provide effective and comprehensive care to these patients.
