All the cases analyzed in this study replicated the original study of Mintzberg (1973), allowing, therefore, comparisons and analyzes, with support of the descriptive statistics. To know the nature of the work of the leader in small business is relevant because it allows self-reflection on his work routine in order to improve their performance and may also assist development organizations and educational entities in teaching activities specific to the reality of small business. Results: It was concluded that the work of small business manager can be described by the roles approach and specifically by the roles: operator; specialist; decision and information. The small business owner manager, however, does not recognize himself playing the interpersonal roles.
