Digital Textbook in Epub Format: Potentials and Challenges for use in Education

Resumo: | This study presents the result of the investigation of similar experiences, within the stage of analysis of the design project for the implementation of the digital textbook in EPUB format in distance education at the Federal Institute of Espírito Santo. The objective was to understand the strengths and weaknesses of this format as a digital textbook. For this, it used the bibliographic research method, analyzing a total of 24 works, national and international, published between 2016 and 2021. According to the analyses, the EPUB format has great potential for use in educational contexts, as it allows the incorporation of media, interactive activities, mathematical formulas, among others, as well as enabling the accessibility of all content. However, there are relevant points that can make its adoption difficult, among them, the need for advanced knowledge in HTML and CSS programming to implement interactive resources and their accessibility. |

El objetivo era comprender las fortalezas y debilidades del formato como libro de texto digital. Para ello, utilicé el método de investigación bibliográfica, analizando un total de 24 obras, nacionales e internacionales, publicadas entre 2016 y 2021. Según los análisis, el formato EPUB tiene un gran potencial para su uso en contextos educativos, ya que permite la incorporación de medios, actividades interactivas,fórmulas matemáticas, entre otros, porque permite la accesibilidad de todo o contenido. Sin embargo, existen puntos relevantes que pueden dificultar su adopción,entre ellos, la necesidad de conocimientos avanzados en programación en HTML y CSS para implementar recursos interactivos y su accesibilidad. Este estudo apresenta o resultado da investigação de experiências semelhantes, dentro da etapa de análise do projeto de design para implantação do livro didático digital no formato EPUB na educação a distância do Instituto Federal do Espírito Santo. O objetivo foi compreender as potencialidades e as fragilidades desse formato como livro didático digital. Para isso, utilizou o método de pesquisa bibliográfica, analisando um total de 24 trabalhos, nacionais e internacionais, publicados entre 2016 e 2021. Segundo as análises, o formato EPUB tem um grande potencial de uso em contextos educacionais, pois possibilita a incorporação de mídias, atividades interativas, fórmulas matemáticas, entre outros, bem como viabiliza a acessibilidade de todo o conteúdo.
