Resumo: The present paper focuses on the genesis of the poetic work of Father Oscar Bertholdo. Born into a family of small farmers in the mountainous region of Rio Grande do Sul, Bertholdo found the motivation and the necessary tools for building a significant body of literary work in the Catholic seminaries of religious education. Classes in philosophy and foreign languages, often comprising the great classics of universal and Brazilian literature, awakened in the young seminarian the taste and aptitude for literary creation recognized by great personalities of Brazilian national culture, such as Nelson Werneck Sodré, Maria Chamie and Don Pedro Casaldáliga.

Egreso de una familia de pequeños agricultores de la región serrana de Rio Grande do Sul, Bertholdo encontró en los seminarios católicos de formación religiosa la motivación y los instrumentos necesarios para construir una significativa producción literaria. Las clases de filosofía y de lenguas extranjeras ilustradas, muchas veces, con los grandes clásicos de la literatura universal y brasileña, despertaron en el joven seminarista el gusto y la aptitud para la creación literaria reconocida por grandes personalidades de la cultura nacional, como Nelson Werneck Sodré, Maria Chamie y Don Pedro Casaldáliga.O presente trabalho tem como tônica a gênese da obra poética do Padre Oscar Bertholdo. Egresso de uma família de pequenos agricultores da região serrana do Rio Grande do Sul, Bertholdo encontrou nos seminários católicos de formação religiosa a motivação e o instrumental necessário para a construção de uma significativa produção literária.
