Dystopian youth: rebelliousness as security device in Fahrenheit 451

Resumo: This work aims to verify how youth rebelliousness is assimilated as a security device by the technologies of power that shape the societies represented in dystopian science fiction. Therefore, the concepts of youth and rebelliousness are discussed, highlighting their symbolic implications (ABRAMO, 1994; GROPPO, 2000; PASSERINI, 1996); then, the notions of governmentality and security device are explored, in order to understand the exercise of power in utopia (FOUCAULT, 2008; 2014; 2019); and, finally, the arguments developed in the theoretical sections are recovered through a critical reading of Fahrenheit 451, selected for the way in which it expresses the relationship between the consumer culture that defines advanced industrial societies and the discourses that shape their youth. The results of this reading indicate that school and mass media contribute to the production of a politically neutral youth, whose rebelliousness is administered to become useful to the very exercise of power.

Para tanto, são discutidos os conceitos de juventude e rebeldia, destacando-se suas implicações simbólicas (ABRAMO, 1994; GROPPO, 2000; PASSERINI, 1996); em seguida, são exploradas as noções de governamentalidade e dispositivo de segurança, a fim de compreender o exercício do poder na utopia (FOUCAULT, 2008; 2014; 2019); e, por fim, os argumentos desenvolvidos nas seções teóricas são recuperados por meio de uma leitura crítica de Fahrenheit 451, obra selecionada em função da maneira como expressa a relação entre a cultura de consumo que define as sociedades industriais avançadas e os discursos que modelam sua juventude.
