Resumo: The three elements of analysis that structure this text refer to major axes of development of José Saramago’s work. History, particularly in the novels of the 1980s, is an important thematic domain represented in those novels, focusing on different times and events; identity relates to significant historical moments, in which the Portuguese condition is questioned (foundation of the nation, emergence of Salazarism, etc.); the figures correspond to individualities that, coming from History, are the object of literary refiguration (e.g., D. Afonso Henriques or D. João V).
