The Lexical Aspect Traces and the-ÇÃO Nominalizations in Brazilian Portuguese

This article describes and analyzes nominalizations in -ção, aiming the investigation of the factors that contribute to the different readings observed: event, result and entity. We assume that these readings are related to: the phases through which these formations pass during their derivation, considering the assumptions of Distributed Morphology (HALLE; MARANTZ, 1993, 1994; MARANTZ, 1997, 2007, 2013; ARAD, 2003;SIDDIQI, 2009; EMBICK, 2010); the presence/absence of lexical aspect traits, dynamicity, duration and telicity (VENDLER, 1967, SMITH, 1997; CROFT, 2012) in nominalizations. We propose that the formations with event and result readings bear a verbal projection and,consequently, an aspectual projection and the nominalizations with entity reading do not go through a verbal projection, since they are formed directly from the noun.
