Resumo: | The present work aims to observe aspects of the morphosyntactic and semantic behavior of the third person pronominal form of in Brazilian Portuguese (PB), from the inventory of features that constitute it, from the perspective of a Feature Theory (HARBOR, ADGER & BÉJAR, 2008). In order to do so, introspection data of Brazilian Portuguese were observed, according to the theoretical assumptions of the Generative Grammar Theory, according to the Minimalist Program (CHOMSKY, 1995 and later), which allowed us to observe that the lexical form of third person can occur in any syntactic context, which allows only defined and specific reading, except in the subject position, which can assume definite and/or specific reading, or neither (expletives cases), and therefore, third person does not present arbitrary behavior. The mentioned results, therefore, point to the following conclusions: (a) the feature geometry of the person category seems to be related to post-syntactic elements, at first, such as semantics and pragmatics; and (b) the third person may be the default pronominal form, in Portuguese, since it is the personal pronoun whose form is more underspecified, has no generic reading and arbitrary behavior and is the expanded form for neutral and expletive in most human languages. |
