Resumo: This article discusses the uses of media among segments of the Brazilian urban middle class living in rural ecovillages. Based on ethnographic data and individual sociological profiles, we argue about the search for social recognition through new ways of working and consuming. The results reflect the extent to which this phenomenon is related to global trends such as cultural globalization, communalism and contemporary individualism. The aspiration to recognition and its denial institutionalized by the capitalist system generated suffering in personal trajectories and the appropriation of cultural models of individualism and communalism as a moral orientation.
