Resumo: This paper focuses on the social production of meanings for aging based on the modes of presentation of older people in today's cinema. We made use of two films with wide circulation to reflect on precepts, conventions, and assumptions regarding the place of older people in society. Derogatory stereotypes and prejudice can be confronted or reaffirmed in the selected plots. As we analyze the social representations of aging triggered by the entertainment industry, we highlight the role of the symbolic in the lived experience in order to argue for the social responsibility of communication in promoting more respectful and supportive ways of living and acting in the world. We demand the constitution of a more nuanced and mindful view of the dignity of later life.

Examinando dos películas de amplia circulación en el mercado mundial, reflexionamos sobre preceptos, convenciones y supuestos sobre el lugar de las personas mayores en la sociedad. En estas tramas se reafirman o confrontan estereotipos y prejuicios despectivos. Analizar las representaciones del envejecimiento desencadenadas por la industria del entretenimiento implica resaltar el papel de lo simbólico en la experiencia vivida y defender la responsabilidad social de la comunicación en la promoción de formas de vivir y actuar más respetuosas y solidarias.Este artigo focaliza a produção social de sentidos para o envelhecimento com base nos modos como o cinema atual apresenta as pessoas mais velhas. Examinando dois filmes de ampla circulação, refletimos sobre preceitos, convenções e pressupostos em relação ao lugar dos idosos na sociedade. Estereótipos derrogatórios e preconceitos são reafirmados ou confrontados nestas tramas.
