Photographs of "the Sun City": a registry of exposure and concealment

Resumo: Among the different media the photograph stands out as an important visual document that establishes the tension between concealment and revelation, crucial to understanding the social and imaginary aspects. The most important relation between photography and tourism is precisely in both don´t being the picture of society, but rather, they are a representation and fragmented memory, capable of continuous interpretations. Photographs are circumscribed by definite social and cultural issues, as there are from a process of creation and assembly consisting of choices and decisions about what deserves to be photographed. This paper discuss the role of photographs of Natal City concatenated to tourism, searching for what is specific that contributed to the construction of tourist landscape in the Natal city and analyzing the ideological elements that motivated its materialization in the spaces of the city. The photographs of Fatos e Fotos magazine published in 1968 will be analyzed through iconographic and iconological observation suggested by Kossoy (2003, 2006, 2009) and directed by dialectical reading of José de Souza Martins (2009), who claims photography’s mediation in the interests immersed at the social life, resulting by the dynamic expression of the exposure, a result of presences and absences that reveal the denials and contradictions of the real world. Finally, means that the landscapes do not exist in themselves while a fixed space, but were consolidated through the discourses and images linked to the hegemonic logic of the capitalist society.

El gran vínculo entre la fotografía y el turismo es precisamente en no ser la imagen real de la sociedad, pero es su representación y es su memoria fragmentada, capaz de interpretaciones continuas. Las fotografías están circunscritas por cuestiones sociales y culturales concretas, ya que existen a través de un proceso de creación y montaje que consiste en elegir y tomar decisiones acerca de lo que merece ser fotografiado. Se reflejarán sobre el papel de las fotografías del turismo de la ciudad de Natal vinculada a la actividad turística, buscando en particular o que contribuyó en la construcción de los paisajes de interés turístico en la ciudad de Natal y si va analizar los elementos ideológicos que motivaron su materialización en los espacios de la ciudad. Para tal fin, se analizarán las fotos de la revista “Fatos e Fotos” en 1968. El método utilizado es la observación iconográfica y iconológica sugerido por Kossoy (2003; 2006; 2009) y dirigida por la lectura dialéctica de José de Souza Martins (2009), que establece que la fotografía media los intereses inmersos en la vida social cotidiana, lo que resulta en la expresión dinámica del registro, un resultado de presencias y ausencias que revelan las negaciones y contradicciones del mundo real. Por último, se entiende que los paisajes no existen en sí mismos, como un espacio fijo, pero se consolidaron a través de los discursos y visualidades vinculadas a la lógica hegemónica de la sociedad capitalista.Entre os diferentes meios de comunicação a fotografia destaca-se como um importante documento visual, que se estabelece na tensão entre a ocultação e a revelação, primordial para o entendimento dos aspectos imaginários do social e suas mediações. O grande elo entre a fotografia e o turismo está justamente em não ser o retrato da sociedade, mas sim, sua representação e memória fragmentada, passível de interpretações contínuas. As fotografias são circunscritas por questões sociais e culturais definidas, já que existem a partir de um processo de criação e montagem que consiste em escolhas e decisões sobre o que merece ser fotografado. Discutir-se-á o papel das fotografias da cidade de Natal concatenadas a atividade turística, buscando o que há de específico que contribuiu para a construção de paisagens turísticas na cidade do Natal e analisando os elementos ideológicos que motivaram sua materialização nos espaços da cidade. Para tal, serão analisadas as imagens da revista Fatos e Fotos, 1968, por meio da observação iconográfica e iconológica sugerida por Kossoy (2003; 2006; 2009) e direcionadas pela leitura crítica de José de Souza Martins (2009), que afirma a mediação da fotografia nos interesses imersos no cotidiano social, traduzindo-se em expressão dinâmica do registro, um resultado de presenças e ausências que revelam as negações e contradições do mundo real.
