Resumo: This article intends to discuss the beginnings and evolution of hotel business in Porto Alegre City, relating the upsurge of these facilities with its historic context and locating them in time and space. This study identifies, classifies and discusses several types of lodging facilities settled between 1732 and 1940 and describes the particular characteristics of each one. This article also discusses the importance of selected hotels that became markers of the social and political history of the city.

Este artículo pretende mostrar como surgieron y evolucionaron los medios de hospedaje en la ciudad de Porto Alegre (RS), relacionando el surgimiento de estos establecimientos con su contexto histórico intentando situarlos en el tiempo y el espacio. Se identificaron algunas tipologías de medios de hospedaje correspondientes a los períodos de 1732 a 1940 así como sus principales características en las diferentes épocas, dando destaque a aquellos hoteles que marcaron la historia social y política de la ciudad.O artigo procura mostrar como se deu o surgimento e a evolução dos meios de hospedagem na cidade de Porto Alegre, relacionando o contexto histórico ao aparecimento destes estabelecimentos, procurando situá-los no tempo e no espaço.
