Resumo: | The article discusses the challenges ofteaching history within the ongoing contextof curriculum reforms in New Zealand.Specifically, I discuss my learningsand challenges, as a Brazilian-born lecturerat a New Zealand public university, toimplement a pioneering history curriculumin the country. In the first part, I presenta brief history of history teaching contextsin New Zealand. I focus on thecurrent process of refreshing the nationalNew Zealand curriculum, which, amongsignificant changes, draws on a pioneeringprinciple entitled mana ōrite mō temātauranga, which intends to give epistemologicalequity between indigenous andWestern knowledge traditions. In the secondpart, I detail and reflect on my ownclassroom initiatives to rethink “what”and “how” to teach history to future NewZealand history teachers amidst the currentdecolonizing context of political andepistemological changes. |
