Resumo: Prescription errors are avoidable situations that can be identified and corrected through evaluation of the quality of prescriptions and follow-up on patient understanding. The inadequate filling can generate harm to the patient and make the treatment ineffective and harmful. Therefore, this study aims to review the literature to describe the main prescription errors and patient understanding of prescriptions in health care facilities, and how misunderstandings can affect treatment. Descriptive studies reviewed pointed out that 74% of respondents did not have enough information about the purpose of the therapeutic treatment and 34.66% of prescriptions were barely legible. Thus, it is imperative that health professionals be attentive to the patient's understanding of the instructions provided, in order to improve the doctor-patient relationship and avoid inconvenience to the health system user.
