Health, hygiene and nutrition in Mexican school manuals from the sixties of the 20th century

Resumo: In this paper we analyze health and hygiene topics provided in the free, unique and compulsory textbooks that circulated in Mexico in the sixties during the 20th century. For this, we trace some lines of context that allow us to insert the book and the subject that concerns us in its production logics: the conceptions of childhood, the location of health and school in the concerns of the federal government and the importance of the books for the nation project. Then we follow two lines to analyze the matters of health and hygiene: the material layout of the book, its content and images. We found a connection between informative and prescriptive discourse through which it was sought to modify the conceptions and health and hygiene practices of both children and their families and communities. This model is consistent with the medical discourse promoted in health institutions, it recreates gender differences between boys and girls, articulates knowledge with individual and collective hygiene practices, and favors the lifestyles of the urban middle class.

Para isso, traçamos algumas linhas do contexto que nos permitem inserir o livro e o assunto que nos interessa em suas lógicas de produção: as concepções de infância, o lugar da saúde e da escola nas preocupações do governo federal e a importância da os livros para o projeto de nação. Em seguida, seguimos duas linhas para analisar as questões de saúde e higiene: a disposição do material do livro, seu conteúdo e imagens. Encontrámos uma ligação entre o discurso informativo e o prescritivo através do qual se procurou modificar as concepções e práticas de saúde e higiene tanto das crianças como das suas famílias e comunidades. Esse modelo é coerente com o discurso médico promovido nas instituições de saúde, recria as diferenças de gênero entre meninos e meninas, articula saberes com práticas de higiene individuais e coletivas e favorece os modos de vida da classe média urbana.Dans cet article, nous analysons les sujets de santé et d'hygiène fournis dans les manuels scolaires gratuits, uniques et obligatoires qui ont circulé au Mexique dans les années soixante du XXe siècle. Pour cela, nous traçons quelques lignes du contexte qui nous permettent d'insérer le livre et le sujet qui nous concerne dans ses logiques de production : les conceptions de l'enfance, la place de la santé et de l'école dans les préoccupations du gouvernement fédéral et l'importance des livres pour le projet de nation. Puis nous suivons deux axes pour analyser les sujets de santé et d'hygiène : la disposition matérielle du manuel scolaire, son contenu et ses images. Nous avons trouvé un lien entre le discours informatif et prescriptif à travers lequel on cherchait à modifier les conceptions et les pratiques de santé et d'hygiène des enfants et de leurs familles et communautés. Ce modèle est cohérent avec le discours médical qui se promouvait dans les établissements de santé ; Il recrée les différences de genre entre garçons et filles, il articule savoirs et pratiques d'hygiène individuelles et collectives, et il privilégie les modes de vie des classes moyennes urbaines.En este escrito analizamos los temas de salud e higiene dispuestos en los libros de texto gratuitos, únicos y obligatorios que circularon en México en los años sesenta del siglo XX. Para ello trazamos algunas líneas del contexto que nos permiten insertar el libro y el tema que nos ocupa en sus lógicas de producción: las concepciones de la infancia, el lugar de la salud y de la escuela en las preocupaciones del gobierno federal y la importancia de los libros para el proyecto de nación. Luego seguimos dos líneas para analizar los temas de salud e higiene: la disposición material del libro, su contenido e imágenes. Encontramos una conexión entre discurso informativo y prescriptivo a través del cual se buscaba modificar las concepciones y las prácticas de salud e higiene tanto de los niños como de sus familias y comunidades.
