Remote Laboratories as an Alternative to Practical Activities in Distance Learning Courses

Resumo: | This study aimed to explore remote laboratories (LR) and their potential for practical activities in Distance Education. LRs are devices that can support experimental activities, and thus promote that they can provide an important resource for improving teaching and learning processes in distance learning courses. The research, with qualitative approach used as strategy a case study. Twelve remote laboratories built by the Remote Experimentation Laboratory (RExLab), from the Federal University of Santa Catarina, in Araranguá / SC, were made available for the research. Participated in the research, conducted in 2018 and 2019, 259 students of undergraduate courses in distance education. For data collection we used an online questionnaire that was completed by students after access to an LR. The 24-item questionnaire included items that sought to examine students' perceptions of remote experimentation with respect to learning perception, usability, utility, and satisfaction criteria when using remote laboratories. The average Likert score for all questionnaire items was 3.98 and the Cronbach's alpha coefficient was 0.97. The research indicated that the students presented positive receptivity to the study proposal and evaluations were positive to all the themes explored recognizing that remote laboratories as a valid and important tool for teaching and learning. Remote labs.Este estudo teve por objetivo explorar os laboratórios remotos (LR) e suas potencialidades, para atividades práticas na Educação a Distância. Os LR são dispositivos que podem apoiar as atividades experimentais e, assim, proporcionar um importante recurso para melhoria nos processos de ensino e de aprendizagem em cursos nas modalidades presencial e a distância. Esta pesquisa, de abordagem qualitativa, utilizou como estratégia um estudo de caso. Foram disponibilizados para a pesquisa doze laboratórios remotos construídos pelo grupo de pesquisas Laboratório de Experimentação Remota (RExLab). Participaram da pesquisa, realizada nos anos de 2018 e 2019, 293 alunos de cursos de graduação na modalidade EaD. Para a coleta de dados, utilizou-se um questionário on-line que foi preenchido pelos alunos após o acesso a um LR. O questionário, composto por 24 itens, incluiu itens que buscaram examinar a percepção dos estudantes sobre a experimentação remota no que tange a critérios sobre a percepção da aprendizagem, a usabilidade, utilidade e sua satisfação ao utilizar os laboratórios remotos. O escore médio de Likert para a totalidade dos itens do questionário foi 3,98; o coeficiente de alfa de Cronbach apurado foi de 0,92. A pesquisa indicou que os alunos apresentaram receptividade positiva à proposta do estudo, e avaliações foram positivas a todos os temas explorados, reconhecendo os laboratórios remotos como ferramenta válida e importante para o ensino e a aprendizagem.
