Resumo: A Math teacher wrote this report, describing her own experience with teaching a class of 5th graders, who she followed until they finished Primary School, at a school in the city of Itirapina, in the countryside of the state of São Paulo. The teacher identified prejudiced relationships between the students and felt the need to incorporate this issue into mathematic content. To do this, she developed the New People Project (Projeto Gente Nova), aimed at teaching notions of geometry and problem solving, in a context of coexistence with differences and the benefits of differences. Group activities, including poetry and reading activities, culminated in the resolution of a problem: portrayal of a part of a song using a geometric composition. At the end of the process, the various manners of behavior among colleagues, groups and the class were discussed. According to the teacher, the project met its goal, which was shown in the attitudes and discourse of the students. She continued to develop this project, which became known as "Self-Awareness for Good Coexistence".
