Resumo: This commentary discusses the results of the SAEB in the ten year period of 1995 to 2005. An explanatory panorama is presented beyond the repercussions in the press regarding falling performance of students during this period. There is a focus on the data from SAEB 2005, which show an improvement in some state systems and a decline in others, reflecting, to an extent, the various investments of different administrators. The SAEB is considered to allow for an appropriate diagnosis of the situation and transformation of this reality. However, for this to happen, the commentary highlights that data should be public, understood and appropriate for all of society, promoting debates and collaborating with administrators. The conclusion is reached that these professionals should allocate resources according to the results and needs of the schools, based on participatory administration.

Concentra-se nos dados do SAEB 2005, que revela melhora na rede de alguns estados e piora em outros, refletindo, em alguma medida, os diversos investimentos dos diferentes gestores. Considera que o SAEB permite um diagnóstico adequado da situação e transformação dessa realidade. Entretanto, para que isso ocorra, destaca que os dados devem ser públicos, entendidos e apropriados por toda a sociedade, promovendo debates e colaborando com os gestores.
