Resumo: The aim of this study was to identify the reasons why students choose a particular higher education institution in the Distance Learning modality. For this purpose, a questionnaire based on studies of Mainardes and Domingues (2010) was applied to a sample of 405 students that are enrolled in the 1st semester of 2014, at a private higher education institution in the interior of Brazil. A qualitative exploratory research and a quantitative exploratory factor analysis revealed the existence of twelve items grouped into three dimensions. These dimensions were named visibility, flexibility to the student and marketing strategies; being the second dimension the most decisive for choosing a higher education institution. As for the items, the schedule flexibility, the tuition and the market acceptability of the institution were elected by students as most important when choosing a higher education institution.

Para isto, aplicou-se um questionario baseado nos estudos de Mainardes e Domingues (2010) a uma amostra de 405 alunos, ingressantes no 1º semestre de 2014, em uma IES privada do interior do Brasil. Por meio de pesquisa exploratoria qualitativa e posteriormente uma analise fatorial exploratoria quantitativa, verificou-se a existencia de doze itens agrupados em tres dimensoes. Estas dimensoes foram batizadas de visibilidade, flexibilidade ao aluno e estrategias de marketing; sendo a segunda, a determinante para a escolha por uma IES.
