Quality and equality in education: reconsidering the meaning of "within-school factors"

Resumo: This paper deals with the issue of quality and equality in schools. The empirical investigation is based on data of Brazilian national assessment, mathematics, grade 4th, carried out in 2001. Findings stress that school factors associated to quality are also associated to within-school inequality. In this context, we discuss to what extent and under which conditions features associated to quality may also be associated to within school system equity.

Investiga, especificamente, caracteristicas escolares promotoras de eficácia escolar y de equidad intra-escolar, e identifica y evalúa el efecto sobre la equidad de caracteristicas escolares asociadas, simultaneamente, a la eficácia escolar e al aumento de las desigualdades dentro de las unidades escolares.O artigo investiga quais caracteristicas escolares estao associadas ao aumento do desempenho medio das escolas medido por meio dos testes de Matematica, da 4a serie do Ensino Fundamental, pelo SAEB 2001.
