Resumo: Hysterectomy consists in the partial or total removal of the uterus and is the second most frequent medical procedure among women within the reproduction age bracket attended by the Brazilian National Health Service (SUS). Current research investigated the main indications and risk factors that predispose women towards hysterectomy in a private hospital attending SUS patients. A structured and pre-codified questionnaire with dissertative and multi-choice questions was handed out to 105 female patients who underwent the surgery in the above-mentioned hospital between November 2011 and April 2012. There was an increase in the number of hysterectomies related to aging and to proximity with menopause, low social and demographical conditions and schooling. Uterine myomatosis was also the predominant indication for hysterectomy as first choice treatment and which established the need for surgery. Other empirical investigations are required to deepen knowledge within the state and national context towards the prevention and awareness of females in gynecological follow-up so that hysterectomy may be avoided.
