Resumo: Candida albicans is the main species in fungus infections of the mouth, with a high virulence featured by the adhesion capacity to mouth tissues and biofilm formation. Solanum acanthodes Hook has a wide geographic distribution and may be found in the Amazon forest of Peru, Ecuador and Brazil. Its leaves are used against infections of the urinary pathways, cholesterol, kidney and belly aches and diabetes. Current analysis evaluates the fungicide activity of the ethanol extract of the S. acanthodes leaves on C. albicans in vitro. Discs with a 5 mm-diameter of cultures isolated from the fungus were placed in the center of petri dishes with BDA medium; four filter paper discs, each with 1 mL of a vegetal extract by maceration were symmetrically placed on the periphery of the plates. Positive control consisted of discs without the vegetal extract, whereas negative control discs with a chemical product were used. The assay had a random design with three replications (plates) per treatment. Fungus growth at every 24 hours during six days was evaluated by measuring the colonies. Data underwent analysis of variance and averages were compared by Tukey´s test at 5%. After 144 hours ethanol extract of the S. acanthodes leaves had good results on C. albicans strain. Fungus growth was inhibited (average 2.4) with a higher inhibitory spectrum when compared to that of the chemical product (average 3.4).
