Intercropping Between Achillea millefolium L. and Rosmarinus officinalis L. and its effects on essential oil yield, biomass and anti-microbial activity

Resumo: The rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) and the yarrow (Achillea millefolium) are medicinal aromatic herbs and produce essential oil. Current experiment evaluated the effect of intercropping between two species in biomass and essential oil yield and the antimicrobial activity of the essential oil of rosemary. After the plants’ culture and harvest, the biomass and the essential oil yields of the dry leaves and flowers were obtained by steam water distillation. Data of biomass and essential oil yield (w/w) were analyzed by the program SAEG of the Federal University of Viçosa. Yield of rosemary and yarrow essential oil and biomass of yarrow were highest in intercropping, whereas the biomass of the rosemary decreased by intercropping. The essential oil of rosemary had antimicrobial activity with strains of Bacillus subtilis and Candida albicans, respectively with CIM 1000 and 500 µg/ml.

Este experimento avaliou o efeito da consorciação entre as duas espécies no rendimento de biomassa e óleo essencial e na atividade antimicrobiana do óleo essencial de alecrim. Após cultivo e colheita verificou-se a biomassa e o rendimento do óleo essencial, por extração por arraste a vapor d’água, das folhas de Rosmarinus officinalis e Achillea millefolium, bem como das flores da Achillea millefolium. Os dados obtidos de biomassa e rendimento de óleo essencial (p/p) foram analisados através do programa estatístico SAEG da Universidade Federal de Viçosa. Verificou-se maior rendimento do óleo essencial de alecrim e de mil-folhas obtido do cultivo consorciado e de biomassa de mil-folhas, já a biomassa de alecrim diminuiu quando cultivado em consorciação.
