Resumo: Karate-Do involves numberless physical abilities, particularly the hands, featuring high capacity movements, strength and muscle resistance. Current analysis studies and compares the Hand Grip Strength (HGS) among karate-do – Shotokan athletes and non athletes. Fifteen (10 males and 5 females) athletes and 18 (11 males and 7 females) were the subjects of the study. Body mass, stature, HGS of both hands were evaluated and the Mann-Whitney test at 5% was applied. Age and body mass failed to show any difference, within the sample´s general characteristics, between the sexes and among the athletes and non athletes. Stature and BMI showed that female athletes had a lower stature and a greater BMI when compared to the female non athlete group. This fact was not observed in the male group. No significant difference was extant between the groups evaluated for HGS. Although no statistically significant differences existed between the groups, a greater uniformity was perceived between the HGS means for the right and left hand in Karate Do athletes and non athletes. The above is perhaps due to the fact that Karate-do contributes uniformly to strength stimulation of the left and right hemibodies.
