Resumo: Obesity is a health and life quality threatening feature which has become an increasingly serious issue worldwide and in Brazil. Obesity, characterized by the accumulation of triacylglycerol in the adipocytes, is mainly caused by the intake of high fatty levels or hypercaloric diets associated with low physical activities. Excessive accumulation of triacylglycerol is associated to serious diseases such as metabolic syndrome, arteriosclerosis, type 2 diabetes, and hypertension. Several studies have been undertaken in many countries, especially in Japan and in the United States, to develop and introduce in diets fatty elements that would trigger the decrease and the prevention of obesity. The above investigations suggest that diacylglycerol and triacylglycerol have distinct metabolic characteristics and that diacylglycerol metabolism in the organism may prevent and treat obesity. Current analysis provides available information in the literature which deals with the beneficial effects of diacylglycerol which include absorption mechanisms, the way it is metabolized and focus on studies on this fatty oil. It will be a contribution to health policies in Brazil since some 63 million Brazilian are overweight, 15 million feature slight obesity and 4 million have morbid obesity.
