Resumo: | Regardless of status and function, supervision by nursing is a strategy for the democratization of ideas and activities in health. Previous studies-based research describes the importance of nursing supervision in health institutions. The bibliographical and exploratory research, undertaken between April and May 2013, is based on data derived from Lilacs, Scielo, Bireme and Medline. Supervision develops specific activities and the supervising factor undertakes power and authority status. However, new knowledge and social sciences have changed the focus from authoritarian to educational. Investments in the preparation of professionals and adequate planning activities will foreground the principles and guidelines of the government health system. |

Investments in the preparation of professionals and adequate planning activities will foreground the principles and guidelines of the government health system.A supervisão realizada pela enfermagem, independente do cargo ou função que exerça, é uma estratégia para a democratização das ideias e ações em saúde. Objetivou-se neste trabalho então descrever a importância das ações de supervisão de enfermagem nas instituições de saúde com base em estudos já publicados. É pesquisa do tipo estudo bibliográfico de caráter exploratório, realizado entre abril e maio de 2013 nas bases de dados Lilacs, Scielo, Bireme e Medline. A supervisão surge com intuito de desenvolver atividades específicas, sendo que o elemento supervisor assumia cargos de poder e autoridade; porém, com o surgimento de novos conhecimentos e das ciências sociais, o enfoque mudou de autoritário para educativo.
