Resumo: The needs of mental health care of kin and people with mental disorders who participate in a university extension project are discussed. Research-activity was undertaken in Curitiba, Brazil, with six people with mental disorders and seven kin. Data were collected by an individual semi-structured interview and educational seminars and categorized by thematic analysis. Results show that the family and the person with mental disorders must receive guidelines and support so that they could organize and reorder their roles in the face of the situation. In other words, the sick person should be cared for and respected by health professionals and should receive all information to cope with the disorder. The establishment of care spaces in the community is required so that these people could be welcome and guided.

Trata-se de uma pesquisa-ação desenvolvida em Curitiba, Paraná, Brasil, com seis pessoas com transtorno mental e sete familiares. A coleta dos dados foi por meio de entrevista semiestruturada individual e seminários educativos. Os dados foram categorizados pela análise temática. Os resultados apontaram que a família e a pessoa com transtorno mental precisam receber orientações e suporte para que possam reorganizar e reordenar seus papéis diante desta realidade. Isso equivale à pessoa doente ser cuidada e respeitada pelos profissionais que trabalham na área da saúde, bem como a receber informações para o enfrentamento deste transtorno.
