Depression in patients with breast cancer in hospital treatment

The present study aimed to evaluate the intensity of depression in patients diagnosed with breast cancer in hospital treatment in a city in western Paraná. An investigation was performed where subjects involved answered a questionnaire that refers to the common symptoms and attitudes in depressive patients, called the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Twenty women were evaluated, with mean age 57.35 (± 11.24). The analysis showed 70% of women with a minimal degree of depression, 15% with a mild degree and 5% with a moderate degree. The percentage of patients who reported not feeling guilty, punished, disappointed with themselves or who lost interest in others was expressive. It was concluded that although breast cancer causes important psychological repercussions for the development of depression, the sample population studied did not score severe depressive symptoms.
