Resumo: Babies born after a pregnancy period of less than 37 weeks are considered premature. Prematurity brings immaturity in physiological and motor functions and impairs development and growth. Health teams must be capacitated to maximize care through medicine’s resources so that the full growth of the newly-born child may occur. Nutritional evaluation is of paramount importance when the prognostic, diagnostic and follow-up of the nutritional state exists and the efficaciousness of nutritional therapy is verified. Mother’s milk, among other forms of feeding to premature babies, is the most important physiological and nutritive formula which may be administered orally or by catheter. It should be emphasized that milk produced by mothers of premature babies is somewhat different in its composition. Milk is more complete so that prematurity may be compensated. Another important aspect in the treatment of premature babies is the mother-child relationship, highly recommended for neuron-motor development. In fact, increase in stimuli decreases hospitalization time and the transference of feeding from catheter to oral mode. Current bibliographical revision collects information produced between 1997 and 2007 on the physiological and morphological aspects, nutrition evaluation, nutritional requirements, importance of breastfeeding, nutritional aspects of special formulas, enteral and parenteral nutritional therapy and experiences in the management of the premature baby.
