The problems of the River São Francisco from the point of view of inhabitants of Petrolina and Juazeiro: focusing on health

Resumo: The perception of inhabitants of the towns of Petrolina PE Brazil, and Juazeiro BA Brazil, with regard to issues on the river São Francisco is discussed. A qualitative study was undertaken, comprising 77 people who live, work or frequent the sites and who somehow use the river. Through Bardin´s content analysis, one may perceive that the river is the best natural good in the São Francisco Valley. They also remarked on dumping of garbage and sewage into the river as major issues that jeopardize health, life and work quality of the population. Changes in behavior and the establishment of a managing unit concerned with environmental and social issues should be undertaken to minimize impacts caused by human activities. The aim is to increase social, environmental and economically sustainable development.

A fim de compreender o assunto, foi realizada uma pesquisa de campo, em que foram entrevistados 77 sujeitos que moram, trabalham ou frequentam aqueles espaços e utilizam o rio de diferentes formas. A partir da análise de conteúdo, foi possível perceber que, para os entrevistados, o rio se apresenta como o principal bem natural presente no Vale do São Francisco. No entanto, na percepção dos sujeitos da pesquisa, o rio enfrenta problemas como o descarte de lixo e esgoto, que prejudicam a saúde, a qualidade de vida e o trabalho da população.
