Self-medication by undergraduates: a review of the literature published between 2000 and 2017

Resumo: Self-medication is a public health issue. The occurrence of self-medication among undergraduates in health courses is problematized since they should be aware of the harm caused by such practice and the importance of professional evaluation. A review of the literature was undertaken to identify research works that investigate the theme ‘self-medication with psychotropic drugs by undergraduates in health courses’, between 2000 and 2017. Further, 2,366 articles were classified from databases BVS, LILACS, Bireme and SciELO, out of which 11 were selected. The quantitative method was applied to 90.9% of research works (self-applied structured questionnaires), with sampling higher than 282 participants. Psychotropic self-medication among undergraduates is really a matter of concern. Self-medication does not solve the problem and risks increase. Applied quantitative studies proved to be efficient in the identification of self-medication. Due to the scarcity of studies and the many health undergraduate courses, research on the theme is needed for the northern region of Brazil.

Problematiza-se a incidência da automedicação entre universitários da área da saúde, uma vez que os estudantes deveriam estar cientes dos malefícios de tal prática, bem como da importância da avaliação profissional. No presente estudo, foi realizada uma revisão sistemática da literatura para identificar pesquisas que investigaram a temática “automedicação de psicotrópicos em estudantes da área da saúde” entre os anos de 2000-2017. Depois da ordenação, classificação e análise de 2.366 artigos selecionados inicialmente, 11 artigos foram selecionados das bases de dados: BVS, LILACS, Bireme e SciELO. O método quantitativo foi aplicado em 90.9% das pesquisas (questionários estruturados de autoaplicação) com amostragem superior a 282 participantes. É preocupante a incidência de automedicação psicotrópica entre universitários. A automedicação não soluciona o problema e adiciona risco de piora.
