Durante o período colonial, as áreas mais ao interior do continente da América portuguesa eram taxadas pelos habitantes dos núcleos urbanos do litoral como inóspitas, desertas, sertões, e seus habitantes originais eram designados como selvagens, bárbaros, incultos. Tomando como base esse imaginário construído sobre os sertões, o presente trabalho tem por objetivo analisar, através de uma série de documentos oficiais (cartas, petições, provisões e editais), as práticas sociais e as negociações envolvendo o poder local da vila de Cimbres, nos sertões de Ararobá, e do Governo de Pernambuco e da Coroa portuguesa, durante a passagem do século XVIII para o XIX. During the firsts centuries of colonization the more countryside areas of the Portuguese America were called deserts by the inhabitants of the urban centers by the shores. Those areas were called empty, inhospitable, and their inhabitants called savages, uncultured and barbarians. Based on this imaginary built on the countryside areas, this study aims to examine, through a series of official documents (letters, petitions, and notices), social practices and negotiations involving local authorities Village Cimbres in frontiers of Ararobá region, and the Government of Pernambuco and Portuguese crown, during the transition from the XVIIIth to the XIXth centuries.
