The struggle for recognition is the factor, which motivates distinct social groups to claim demands of justice within societies. At the institutional level, this struggle is crucial not only to the formation of the subject of law but to the formation of its subjectivity. This theory, developed by Axel Honneth, offers an alternative concept of subjective formation of the individual considering its social environment, in contrast to the traditional atomistic interpretation offered by Kant. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to present a Hegelian perspective through the Honneths thought to understand the relationship between the individual, the state and the contemporary law. Furthermore, this work also aims to establish a relationship - if possible - with Arendt's idea of the "right to have rights" to argue that recognition is indispensable to the experience of political freedom
